Want to know how to use sewing patterns? Ever wondered if you are doing it all right? Ever been put off by all the information squeezed into that small little packet? In this course, we cover all aspects of using a sewing pattern from the big brands – Simplicity, New Look, Burda, McCalls, Butterick, Vogue and Kwik Sew.
Starting with the pattern envelope we go through every piece of information on the front and back, before moving onto the instructions inside. We will help you to figure out which garment to make, how much fabric to buy, what other extras and notions you need and which pieces of the pattern to use.
We also give you an in-depth understanding of ease and how that relates to the fit of your garments. Using our downloadable worksheet you can follow along and calculate exactly how much ease is right for you and your project. We’ll also teach you how to calculate and use the finished garment measurements to pick a size that will give you the look you want. We’ll even show you how to blend between sizes if, like most of us, you are not the same pattern size all over.
With all that information at your disposal, we will then teach you about the cutting layouts in the patterns and the best way to successfully cut your fabrics and transfer your markings. After a final overview of the sewing instructions provided in the pattern, you’ll be ready to start sewing with confidence!
You do not need to follow along with your own pattern in this course but, if you wish to, you will need the following tools and materials:
★ Your downloadable worksheet or a notebook and pen
★ A commercial sewing pattern
★ Highlighter
★ Paper Scissors
★ A fabric marker or chalk for transferring markings
★ A ruler and pencil (if pattern adjustments are needed)
★ Tape (if pattern adjustments are needed)
I just wanted to drop you a quick email to say how much I enjoyed this class. I have been sewing for about 7 years now and although I have had lots of success with the indie patterns, I have found commercial patterns either hard to follow or they come up tent like! Having followed along using a Simplicity pattern that I had been worried about attempting, I found that it had between 8 and 9 inches of ease all over! I’m sure it would be a great “wafting” dress made as directed! But of course, it explains why I have had issues with many commercial patterns over the years. Being able to work out the ease and having an understanding of wearing ease verses pattern ease are some new skills that I have gained from your course, as well as some useful reminders. I particularly liked how you showed to mark the dart as its much more straightforward than how I was originally taught by my Mum! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
You two ladies are great teachers. This course is just what I needed. Got back into (when I say ‘got back into’ I don’t think I knew that much in the first place) sewing a couple of years ago. This was just right for me back to basics with lots of tips along the way. I am now feeling much more confident in tackling grading in between sizes. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thanks for another great class ladies. I knew quite a lot of the info in this class, however there were lots of tips I picked up, especially around measurements and ease. Also for the stuff I already knew, seeing you doing it has reinforced my thinking and confidence that I do know what I’m doing, most of the time. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
