Replacing The Needles

Collapse Comments

How often, would you say, that you should replace overlocker needles? With my sewing machine, I am quite used to changing the needles depending on the fabric but I’ve not even thought to do that with my overlocker… nor have I thought “oh, I’ve used it for x projects, the needles must be blunt”. Any guidance you can give on that? Of course, I realise that the answer may be in a video I’ve not watched yet…! Thanks!

Hello, apologies if we did not cover that in the lesson. Obviously it depends on how much you are using the machine but we like to change the needles every other month, which for us is probably about 30-40 hours of using the machine x

Hello, near the end of the video, you say that the right needle should be higher than the left needle, which is the opposite of what you said in an earlier lesson, and is not correct according to my manual (Elna, which is almost exactly the same as Janome) and a couple other brands I just checked! 🙂

Hi Amanda, thanks for bringing that to our attention. We’ll look into it. I would go with your manual on that particular point.

hi there, i also noticed that you said the right should be higher than the left, but the reserve is true – this is quite confusing! other than that, the videos are great and have helped me immensely in learning to use my overlocker.

Thanks Elspeth, we will check if we said it the wrong way round. Glad you are enjoying the class though!
Happy sewing

I am so glad you say we can get away with universal needles. I don’t find it easy to get the needles they (Janome, the same model as yours) state we should use. Is there somewhere I can easily find the correct needles? I’m in UK.
