We love precuts! Precuts are bundles of coordinating quilting fabrics, specifically designed to save you time when quilting. All the hard work has been done for you, so what’s not to love? Say goodbye to all of that time-consuming coordination of fabrics and cutting. This means that you get to spend more time at the sewing machine and less time at the cutting board!
Here we will explain what each precut is, what you get for your money and we will show you one of our favourite free patterns to sew with it!
Jelly Roll 2.5″ Strips
A Jelly Roll is a precut made from strips of fabric which are cut at 2.5″ wide by the width of the fabric. These strips are perfect for sashing, borders, and binding, but that’s not all! Jelly roll friendly patterns tend to be simple and fast to complete, we have even had a few Jelly Roll Races in our time at the sewing school!
We love this Star Bright Quilt from Deborah Jacobs for Moda Bake Shop. It is an easy and quick project for anyone to complete. The finished quilt is 60″ x 80″ and its such a cute design.
Honey Bun 1.5″ strips
Much like Jelly Rolls, honey buns are long strips the width of the fabric but this time they are 1.5″ wide. Again these are perfect for sashing, boarders and binding but there is so much more you can do with them.

We love this geometric quilt from Wedding Dress Blue. It’s such a clever way to use a honeybun, but we can also imagine it in scrap fabrics too! It’s called “Tri-me Honey” Quilt and it looks really fun to sew.
5″ Charm Packs
A charm pack is a collection of 5″ squares from the same designer’s collection of quilting fabrics. There are a huge amount of patterns to choose from that start with 5″ squares. All the hard work has been done for you, so when you are ready to sew you can just get started. They are also ideal to mix and match if you are making a bigger quilt (they also come in solid colours too).
Check out this amazing quilt from Sonia Doty Lewis for Moda Bake Shop. Not only does it feature charm packs but its a wonderful improvisational pattern. It’s called “Slightly Off Kilter”, which is very appropriate!
Layer Cake 10″ Squares
When you are looking for something quick then look no further than Layer Cakes! These amazing precuts are just like jumbo charm packs, this time using 10″ squares. They are great to simply sew together to make a quick quilt top but there is so much more you can do with them. Imagine making half-square triangles from those big 10″ squares! That would be so much fun.

Stars are a common feature in quilts and we just love these huge ones! Check out this beautiful Stargazer pattern from Anne Wiens for Moda Bake Shop. It’s made using 10″ squares and it is nice and quick to sew!
Mini Charm Packs
Now we have looked at regular and supersized charms, now we want to to introduce you to the miniature charms! How cute are these! At only 2.5″ square, mini charms are as cute as a button! Mini charms are great for small projects like table runners, and mini quilts, but they’re also perfect for Irish chain quilts and sashing cornerstones.
Don’t you just love this cute baby quilt from Christine Weld for Moda Bake Shop, it really is a perfect way to show off those mini fabrics.
Once you start using precut fabrics you will also be saying “We love precuts!”. We absolutely love having some precuts in our stash. They are ready to be sewn together whenever you get a free hour or two. We really hope that this blog has inspired you if you have a favourite quilt pattern you sew with your precuts please send it to us.
