Animal print is HUGE this season. You literally can not walk down the high street without feeling like you are on safari. As big fans of animal print, we are both delighted that we get to release our inner Bet Lynch into the wild! But as a dressmaker who wants to make their own animal print creations, where on earth can you buy quality animal print fabrics?
Well, it just so happens that we have spent the last couple of weeks scouring the internet for fabrics we can use to recreate our favourite high street and catwalk pieces. So, to save you the trouble, we thought we’d just post our findings here on the blog so that you can come and join us in our sewing Serengeti!!
Fabworks have a great selection of leopard, snake and even zebra fabrics. They have an abundance of jerseys, including our favourite crepe jersey. They also have some gorgeous georgettes and drapey polyesters that they call Lamia and a heavy cotton sateen that would be perfect for trousers. Here are some of our favourites from their website:
Minerva have probably the widest range of animal print fabrics that we have seen with chiffon, velour, poplin, jersey, satin, viscose, crepe and even mesh. They have a sale running at the moment so many of the fabrics are reduced. Rachel took advantage this week buying some of their polyester satin for just £2.99 a metre and Nikki bought some of this Marcello crepe jersey! Here are some of our favourites:
We checked out Fabric Godmother after Kate from The Foldline mentioned their leopard print fabrics in their latest Sewing The Trends video. They have a couple of beautiful animal print options with a red base which we have not seen anywhere else. But the star of the show is definitely this amazing coating. Rachel has already started work on a zebra print coat otherwise she would not be able to resist!
Not quite as well known to the sewing community is Midland Textiles who specialise in beautiful lace and special occasion fabrics. They do have in some beautiful animal prints too including micro satin, crepe, chiffon and velvet.
If you love scuba as much as we do, this is the place to go to for animal print! They have several different animal print scuba designs including this rainbow backed version. We think these would sew up into fantastic wiggle dresses, bomber jackets and sweatshirts.
If you want to go the whole hog (or leopard) then the fur fabrics from Abakhan would make the most snuggly and stylish fur coats or gilets. They also have some gorgeous stretch velvets and this liquid gold brocade would make something really special.
So there you have it. The best that we have found on our animal print fabric safari. We hope this inspires you to unleash your inner tiger, zebra, snake or leopard. Animal print is timeless and never really goes out of style. We just hope we don’t get too carried away……
